Most Families Decide on a Day Out Within a Fortnight. Is Your Marketing Ready?

New Forest Wildlife Park, Hampshire

Here's a myth that stopped people in their tracks at our Great Days Out webinar.

"Our visitors plan their visit well in advance."

It's the assumption behind most attraction marketing calendars. Big campaign in spring, push for summer, ease off. But when we asked 904 UK families how far ahead they plan a day out, the answer turned that calendar on its head.

What families actually told us about booking days out

32.6% plan one to two weeks ahead. 30.2% plan just a few days ahead. Only 3.3% plan six months or more in advance.

Nearly two-thirds of your audience are deciding within a fortnight of their visit.

So the big campaign you built months ago matters less to this Saturday's visitor than two much smaller things. Does your Instagram feed look active this week? Does your Google listing show the right opening hours?

Campaign planning isn't pointless

Let's be clear. Planning still matters. You need a plan to know what you're saying and when.

But the work that happens in the ordinary run of weeks, today and tomorrow and next Thursday, is what most of your audience actually sees before they decide. A family deciding on Wednesday night is looking at what you've posted lately, what your reviews say, and whether your website answers their questions. They are not looking at the campaign you launched in March.

What converts a fortnight-away browser into a booker

It isn't the perfect hero shot. The survey made that clear too. Suitability, value and honest reviews are what make people stop.

Your potential visitors want to know what parking is like. Whether dogs are welcome. What's actually included in the ticket price. What the queues are like on a Sunday. What happens if it rains.

That's the practical, current, specific information a campaign shoot from six months ago almost certainly didn't capture.

How to be ready for the families deciding right now

Keep your Google listing current

Google is still the front door for 53.3% of families. Opening hours, seasonal changes, prices and recent photos should always be up to date. It's your quickest win.

Show up on social every week

A feed that went quiet a month ago looks like a place that might be closed. Consistent, current posts reassure people that you're open, active and worth the trip.

Answer the practical questions everywhere

Parking, accessibility, dogs, food, rainy day options. Put the answers on your website, in your captions and in your replies to comments.

Use fresh, real content

Photos and video from this month say "this is what it's like right now". That matters to a family deciding about this weekend.

Content that keeps you current

This is exactly what our Content Days are designed to solve. In one visit to your site, we capture a library of real, current, usable content that keeps your channels alive in the weeks that actually matter. Not a polished campaign. Proof. The kind that makes a family on a Thursday evening think: yes, that's the one, that's what we're doing this weekend.

And it helps with something else the survey found: 27.1% of families find attraction marketing too salesy. Real content from a real visit day isn't selling. It's showing.

If this landed for you, let's talk.
